Obituary for Elaine M Lace

Elaine Mae (Vallee) Lace, age 92, passed away peacefully at NWMC Hospital on Thursday, April 26, 2018. Elaine was born in St. Albans, on November 15, 1925, daughter of the late Armand and Loretta (Guyette) Vallee. She married George E. Lace on November 30, 1948. They would have been married 70 years this November.

Elaine attended B.F.A., graduating in 1944 with honors. While attending B.F.A. she her part for the WWII effort by becoming an airplane spotter. After graduating she went on and received a degree at the New York Institute of Journalism. Upon graduating from the NYI, she started her career by working for Dr. G. Berkley as a secretary for the next 2 years. In the evenings she continued her education by receiving many credits from the Community College.

In 1948, Elaine took a break to start a family, but she was hired by Readers Digest to write stories and articles which were published. She also started writing poetry at the same time, which won her many awards in the Books of Poetry and the Irish Connections. She returned back to work full time at the Central Vermont Railroad for the next 15 years, working in the accounting department. This is where she met her husband to be who worked on the Bridge and Building gang. She also sat on the local draft board in Montpelier for many years.

In 1965, Elaine branched out into a new phase of her life by attending Fletcher Allen School of Nursing, receiving her nursing degree and started working for Home Health before retiring.

Elaine was a voracious reader, a member of the Franklin County Humane Society, the Historical Society of both St. Albans and Georgia, the Green Mountain Folklore Society, the Vermont Poetry Association, former president of the Writers Club, a member of the VFW 758, a den mother for the Cub Scouts and an Assistant Boy Scout Leader. She was very active with the Bluebirds and the Campfire Girls.

Elaine is survived by her husband George E. Lace of St. Albans, her daughter Melody Thibault and her husband John of Swanton, her son Carter Eric Lace and his wife Jill of Winnetka, CA, her grandchildren Brent Rouse, Brad-Travis Rouse, Tiffany, Kelsey, and Courtney lace, her great-grandchildren Katrina Possiant, Olivia Creller, Gavin Rouse, and Araya Rouse, her sister Colleen Carron of CT, and her step-brother Rene Vallee of Grand Isle. Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Wanda Vallee, and step-brother Armand Vallee, Jr.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at 10:00 AM in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church. The family will receive condolences on Monday, May 7, 2018 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM in the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St., St. Albans. Memorials may be made to the Franklin County of Vermont Honor Details, C/O VVA Chapter 753, PO Box 965, St. Albans, VT 05478.
